Lorne Hill Farm is a working farm and Caravan Club Certified Location on the edge of the pretty village of East Garston. Situated in the rolling Berkshire Downs, far from the madding crowd, it provides a perfect backdrop to creativity. With the emphasis on having an enjoyable day out, you have the opportunity to work on projects in peaceful surroundings. The workshop is a hive of happy activity, only broken at lunchtime when everyone troops into the farmhouse next door for a delicious lunch in the aga-warmed kitchen.

Now that we have been running our workshops for nearly 2 years, we have been able to draw some conclusions about how best to run things.  Flexibility seems to be what most people like, and we have planned our workshops to be as flexible as possible.

We have themed workshops every few weeks, where everyone will make their own version of a sample piece such as the Hallowe’en hanging.

However, the pitch and stitch mornings (or days) are when what you make is entirely up to you: whether you want to make your first hand-stitched quilt, make one of the projects we have done in the past, but you couldn’t attend the workshop, or work on your own project.

Sandra Kidwell is well known for owning Inches to Metres and inspiring so many people to take up quilting.  She has sewn for years and has a wealth of experience on which to draw.  Her knowledge and enthusiasm for the craft is a huge encouragement to anyone who shares a love of quilting.

Joanne Rabbitts first met Sandra when she attended a sampler course at Inches to Metres and hasn’t stopped quilting since.  Both Sandra and Joanne share a love for traditional and rustic quilt-making.

PITCH AND STITCH

Pitch and stitch is literally when you come along to the workshop to make whatever you like.

You can come for the morning from 10.00am to 1.00pm (£15 per session) or the day from 10.00 to 4.00pm (£30 including lunch).

Pitch and Stitch sessions are held on Wednesdays and one Saturday a month.

  • If you are a complete beginner, you may want to come along to the Pitch and Stitch sessions to make your first quilt.  We can help and guide you in the making of a hand-stitched sampler quilt.  Whilst making a block each session you will learn the different techniques, terms and methods of quilt-making.  Decide on a schedule which suits you – for example, one or two days or mornings a month – how soon you finish your quilt will be decided by how regularly you come.  You should allow 10 morning sessions, or 5 whole days, to complete the quilt top as below.   Our hand-stitched sampler course which ran from late-spring produced some wonderful first quilts.
  • You may want to make a project we covered on a workshop you missed:  We can help you make any of the projects we have held workshops on in the past.
  • You may have completed a quilt top and need help – or the space – to layer and baste it ready for quilting.  The workshop has big, sturdy tables and together we can assemble your quilt and offer ideas and tips on how to quilt it – more hands make light work and can turn what many quilters find a relatively tedious chore into something less arduous.
  • Or you may want to Work on your own project in a relaxed and rural environment: Bring along any sewing project you have and work on it in company – a great way to get advice and pitch ideas!
